INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION YEAR
(6/9 months)

This unique Foundation Year Course was designed specifically for International and European students who wish to continue their education to a higher level but do not meet the language and academic requirements to gain entry to a university in the United Kingdom.

This course can get you fast access to a university degree programme in just 6 to 9 months depending on your level of English. In addition to the 3 months Language training this course offers, you will also be trained in areas of personal development, study skills and understanding overseas cultures to make sure that you gain all the necessary skills you will need for higher education in the UK.

Our foundation programme is accepted by over 80 British Universities. Some universities where our previous students have gone for further studies include:

Is this course for me?

Many of our students taking this course have just completed their basic secondary education in another country and want to study business or computing at a UK university but their level of English and academic qualifications are not sufficient to meet the entry requirements.

If your English level is already at an upper-intermediate level you can skip the English classes and start directly on the other modules.

Entry Requirements:

• Aged 17 years or older.
• Completion of basic secondary education
IELTS certificate (with a score of at least 4) for non-native English speakers.
(Recognised international equivalents of IELTS qualifications are acceptable)

Start Dates:

• Any Monday for students who are starting with IELTS
• January, April, June and September for students who already have an IELTS score of 5.5 and above.

STAGE 1
(3 MONTHS)

1. IELTS English Language Course

Students are required to complete an IELTS test to determine their level of English before they start the course. The main objective of this course is to develop your ability to communicate in English on a professional academic level with a balance of communicative skills, reading and writing, listening and speaking.

The course activities are designed to increase your English confidence, linguistic accuracy and oral competence. Role-play, presentations, summaries, debates and discussions are some examples of the course activities you will perform.

Language skills can only be developed and improved through practice, so this course is geared towards group, pair and project work to ensure student involvement.

1. English for Business Communications

English for Business Communications provides a useful foundation if you intend to take higher level courses delivered in English.

Topics you will cover in this unit include an introduction to communication, narrative writing, descriptive writing, study techniques and communicating with the aid of internet tools.

For your assessment you will have to demonstrate a practical understanding of every topic that was covered.

Please note: this module will be assessed by a global examination.

2. Maths for Computing & Business

After successfully completing Maths for Computing and Business, you will be able to demonstrate a practical understanding of the mathematical concepts underlying many computer related processes and developments.

You will also be able to apply mathematical skills to solve common problems in computing and business. Topics this course will cover include basic arithmetic, fractions and percentages, algebraic techniques, number based systems, graphs and data types.

Please note: this module will be assessed by a global examination.

3. Fundamental Concepts of Computing

This course will give you a broad but secure foundation in the fundamental concepts so that you will be able to make effective and knowledgeable judgements about the use of standard computer systems in the business environment.

Knowledge you will gain in this course will enable you to distinguish between hardware and software components of computer system and help you understand how network connections can be used to link up computer systems.

Security is a crucial requirement to protect valuable data on computers, so you will investigate how simple measures can be applied to achieve more secure operations.

Please note: this module will be assessed by a global examination.

4. PC Competence

PC Competence will introduce the key concepts of computing and how they are applied practically in the workplace and society in general. The main topics covered are word processing, spreadsheets, applications and finally the internet as a communication tool.

5. Study Skills (3 Assignments)

Language should not influence your performance when you study at diploma or graduate level, so this module aims to raise your skills to the level you will need when entering University.

By the end of this course you will be equipped with the skills to overcome linguistic demands. This module will build on your listening, note-taking, research, writing and speaking skills.

Please note: this module will be assessed by 3 global assignments.

6. Understanding Overseas Cultures

This module will increase your awareness of overseas cultures in preparation for entry to the first year of an undergraduate course abroad.

Considering today’s increasingly global work environment, the idea is to help you consider features from foreign cultures in comparison to your own culture. This module will also touch on the most important life skills you will need when integrating into a different society.

Finally, you will look at academic matters that could assist you in successfully completing a degree course.

Please note: this module will be assessed by a global assignment.

7. Essentials of Business

Essentials of Business will give you an understanding of the various types of organisation and how information flow within and between departments.

You will investigate the research process and how raw data can be transformed into useful information. Other skills you will acquire in this course include analysing the working environment and distinguishing between different management and organisational theories.

Sample Timetable:

In the first 3 months of your course you will study IELTS full-time. This will amount to approximately 15 hours of study per week (not included in the timetable above).

The remaining 6 months of the course is divided into two 3 month terms. You may choose to start with either 3 or 4 modules of your choice and complete the rest in the second term. We recommend that you choose a balanced combination of examination and assignment modules.

You may also extend the remaining 6 months to 9 months if you want to study part-time. This means that you will take fewer modules at a time.

1. How can I enrol?

We aim to process your application within 48 hours but please remember to allow more time if you sent your application form to us by post.

Once we have processed your application form we will send you a “Conditional Acceptance Letter” to confirm your enrolment.

If you are applying for a student visa you have to pay the minimum deposit (see question 2) we require before we can send you a “Conditional Acceptance Letter” which is suitable for visa applications.

2. How much do I have to pay as a minimum deposit?

This will depend on your nationality:

• If you are an EU National, you must pay at least 1/3 of the total course fees before your course starts.
• If you are a Non-EU National, you must pay at least ½ of the total course fees before your course starts.

4. Can I apply for a scholarship?

We do offer scholarships to selected students in the form of a fee reduction of up to £1000 per year. To apply for a scholarship you must write an essay of about 500 words entitled: “Why should I receive a grant and what can I bring to enhance the Oxford House College Community?”

Please submit this essay together with your application form and other documents to The Director of Management & Computer Studies. Your specific situation and financial circumstances (as outlined in your letter) will be considered when we make our decision.

5. How long do I need to study for?

You can complete the IFY course in 6 or 9 months depending on your level of English. If you already have an IELTS 5.5 band score you may skip the IELTS classes and complete the course in only 6 months, otherwise the course duration will be 9 months.

The 3 month IELTS course cannot be completed part-time, but the other remaining modules which make up 6 months of the course can be extended to 9 months so that your total course duration will be one year.

6. What is the attendance policy at Oxford House College?

In order to comply with various regulations, we expect our students to attend a minimum of 85% of their classes throughout their course. Teachers will keep a record of each student’s attendance throughout the term.

You will be marked absent if you arrive more than 20 minutes late for class or leave the class more than 20 minutes early. You are only allowed to be absent for a maximum of 4 classes per module each term and will be sent a warning letter after each class that you miss.
You will get 3 warning letters, after which you face expulsion from the school. If you are ill or have an emergency, you need to inform your teacher who will excuse you from the class.

7. Can Oxford House College give me a place to stay while I study?

If you need accommodation while you study we offer a choice of Hostel accommodation or Homestay with a host family at affordable prices. We want your stay to be special so our Accommodation Officers are trained to find you a place that suits your lifestyle.

8. What qualifies as a full-time student?

In order to qualify as a full-term student you need to take at least 3 modules per term. Because our courses are fast-track some students find 4 or 5 modules per term a bit demanding. It is possible to reduce the number of modules you take but it is important to understand that you will then spread your study period over a longer time.

9. Is this college accredited to support me if I am on a student visa?

A large proportion of our students come from other countries and are applying for a student visa at the time they enrol with us, so we are fully aware of the UK Home Office’s requirements.

Oxford House College and all its partners are fully accredited by the British Accreditation Council (BAC), Education UK, The British Council, UCAS (registration number 40445) the Department for Educational Skills (DfES): registration number 23306.

10. What are my career prospects after I’ve completed the course?

After successfully completing this programme, you will meet the requirements to gain entry to a degree course at a university in the United Kingdom.

This course is specifically for students who are interested in the business and computing industries but skills that you gain from this course is also relevant in other industries.

13. What happens if I fail a module?

If you fail a module, you may resit the examination in the next session for a fee of £25. You are welcome to attend the class for a module that you have failed or you can just resit the exam.

14. What do the course fees include?

Course fees include lectures, study guide, access to modern computer facilities and internet access plus wireless connectivity if you have your own laptop.

It does not include resit and exemption fees, maintenance costs or additional study materials. You will have to purchase the prescribed textbook for each module.
