STAGE 1 POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA
IN MANAGEMENT STUDIES- DMS
(6/9 MONTHS)
The Postgraduate DMS acts as an access course
to the MBA Top Up (Stage 3 of this course). It builds on the knowledge
you have gained during your Undergraduate studies and concentrates
on various key operational functions such as Finance,
Marketing and Human Resources Operation at strategic level.
You will also become familiar with international management
practice and the development of effective business cultures.
This programme is designed to develop your presentation,
communication and interpersonal skills,
as well as your strategic thinking and decision-making abilities.
Whether you decide to take the DMS as a stand-alone programme or
as an access course to the MBA Top Up, you will significantly enhance
your management expertise in key business areas either way.

After successfully completing Advanced Professional Development,

In today’s completive dynamic environment, the only thing
that an organisation can be certain of is uncertainty.
Everywhere major changes are occurring, forcing
organisations to adapt the way they are doing
business. All organisations are increasingly being challenged
by change and organisations can either progress or perish.
In this unit you will investigate the reasons for change
and alternative methods for managing change in
the organisation. As manager, you will need to implement processes
and systems for continuous structural and cultural change in organisations
by applying methods such as organisational development,
business process re-engineering and the learning

In short, this unit will help you focus on developing organisational
models that challenge the bureaucracy of the past age.

as manager to look beyond the traditional hierarchical skills

Considering the fact that globalisation is changing the hospitality
environment at an increasing pace, it is important for organisations

and expertise, this unit requires you to plan the implementation
of a new product, service or process.
You will be required to take a full and active role in
all aspects of the development of the project. The selection
of an appropriate business or management

During your project, you will cover a full range of management
activities and roles including resource and people management
and implementation of change.
Effective planning and forecasting in today’s
dynamic global economy is crucial to the success of any organisation.
Organisations need to be proactive in their planning,
with their actions and direction determined by logical
analysis.
It takes skill and judgement
to accurately calculate future events and managers
do not always have assurance of how precise their judgement will
be, but without any progression the organisation will quickly
lose competitiveness, market position and customer

In this unit you will be required to plan and develop the implementation
of a management strategy for an organisation you know well. The
focus of this project is on a participative approach, so you will
need to interact with senior management and stakeholders.
This unit will give you a solid foundation in financial principles
and techniques relevant at a strategic level. The focus of this
unit is on the management of costs through the use of forecasting,
appraisal and financial reporting
procedures.
The main objective of this unit is to provide you with the tools
and confidence to analyse, evaluate and apply financial information.
Mastering this objective will improve your decision-making skills
as a financial manager through the use of validation of
forecasting techniques and the consideration
of financial statements.
In order to complete this unit successfully, you will need to
demonstrate the ability to judge the sources, nature,
accuracy and completeness of cost-based information.
You will also need to apply strategies associated with determining
sound management information with reference to the sources of
funds, the potential investment of resources, and the interpretation
of financial statements.
Management of human resources at all levels can critically affect
the efficiency and effectiveness of an organisation, so this module
will focus on developing the knowledge, understanding and skills
you as manager will need in the planning and development of an
organisation’s human resources.
You will research the role of the HR function,
analyse HR planning and development methods and
how they contribute to organisational objectives and requirements
and investigate performance enhancements.
Managers need to view the role of marketing
as critical to their organisation. Strategic Marketing Management
is a useful introduction to marketing strategy if you are not
a professional marketer but would like to understand how to support
the strategic marketing process.
This unit will introduce the principles of marketing
strategies and develops your knowledge and understanding
of the formulation of a marketing plan. You will investigate the
current marketing environment and consider how
all managers in an organisation can contribute
to the achievement of marketing objectives.
You will discover the theoretical concepts associated
with a marketing strategy and the marketing planning process
and its application to different marketing situations.
In order to optimise business operations, managers need to focus
on the effective and efficient planning and control of operational
systems. To help you achieve this, Quality & Systems
Management will provide an understanding of the design of systems
and processes and suggest commonly used methods to show you how
they can be monitored and improved.
As senior manager, you will need to understand the development
and evolution of quality and quality
models and how they relate to management. If you can
master this, you will be able to focus on important quality aspects
within your own organisation and improving your organisation’s
performance.
After successfully completing Quality & Systems Management,
you will be able to contribute to business excellence
within your own organisation.
In a rapidly changing working environment, the primary emphasis
is on the studies of the last ten years rather
than traditional leadership models. This unit will give you an
insight into current thinking on leadership from
the perspective of the organisation.
You will be required to consider the ranges of competences
and styles of successful leaders,
the importance of the context in which leadership exists and how
organisations can plan to meet their current and future
requirements for leadership.
Although the unit takes the perspective of the organisation,
it provides insights that can contribute to your own leadership
skills. You will also be given the opportunity to develop
your analytical and long-term planning
skills.
Sample Timetable:

This course is made up of 9 modules that you need
to complete in either 6 or 9 months if you are
studying full time. The way in which course modules
are divided between the terms will depend on the course
length option you choose.
Course length: 6 months
If you choose the 6 month option, the course will be divided into
two 3 month terms. Our full-time students usually
start with either 4 or 5 modules of their choice
in the first term and then complete the remaining modules in the
second term.
Course length: 9 months
If you choose the 9 month option, the course will be divided into
three 3 month terms, so you will take 3
modules of your choice each term.
The flexibility of this course allows part-time students to take
fewer modules at a time and extend the length of
their studies.

STAGE 2 WORK PLACEMENT IN A HOTEL
(3/6 MONTHS)
You have the option to undertake work placement for up to 6 months
as part of your sandwich degree programme.
This is the perfect opportunity to practice what you have learnt
so far in real life situations, plus you will gain
the invaluable experience employers prefer when they choose between
job applicants.
Work placement is a great way to enhance your CV
and can be a foot in the door to your dream job.
Many Oxford House College students have impressed their employers
so much that they have been offered permanent jobs after
they have graduated.
Put simply, companies want people who can start working from
day one, so the more you know before you start, the better
your chances of being considered for a full time job after you graduate.
Oxford House Collage will arrange placement for you in a travel
or tourism related area such as a travel agency, airline
or holiday company. You will be assigned a placement officer
who will be your first point of contact with your new employer.
Your placement officer will give you advice on how to prepare a
professional-standard CV and interview
techniques.
Types of tasks you will do vary between employers but will range
from shadowing (literally following someone around
to learn how they do their job) to more general roles
such as office management activities or even a specific
role on a particular project.
We cannot guarantee payment for work placements but employers usually
pay the minimum wage to cover the student’s
living expenses. Please remember that the main objective is for
you to gain valuable experience. You will receive
support from Oxford House College throughout your work placement.
Please note that work placement can only be taken in between
Stage 1 and Stage 3 of this programme.
STAGE 3 MBA WITH CONCETRATION IN HOSPITALITY
MANAGEMENT- Top Up
(3/6 Months)
This programme is designed as a Top-Up programme for
those who have completed the postgraduate DMS (Stage 1) and have
gained at least 2 years relevant work experience
in the Travel & Tourism Industry.
During this programme you will develop your modelling techniques,
strategic management knowledge and competence, and problem-solving
ability.
You will learn how to build up the strategic decision-making
and entrepreneurial skills necessary to
drive success and development in an organisation. You will enhance
your managerial capabilities and broaden your theoretical understanding
of business strategy, applying it to real business situations within
the globally competitive business environment.

Course Modules:
As an increasing number of companies are gaining global reach,
it is becoming crucial for the success of every organisation to
analyse both domestic and global competitors
and the geo/demographic areas in which they function.
In this module, you will use a framework to examine key contemporary
issues affecting global corporate strategy and the management
processes surrounding these issues.
Strategy can only be understood and analysed when you consider
the various stakeholders and their complex relationships
as part of the management of multinational organisations.
Global Corporate Strategy will enable you to achieve this by examining
the design of strategic management processes and establishing
how strategic decisions affect the functioning of the organisation.
After successfully completing this unit, you will be able to
understand the “holistic” nature
of corporate strategy and how it affects organisational decision
making processes. By examining aspects of the external
and internal environment and associated forces on the
organisation, you will develop an appreciation of business and
management within a global setting.

The International Business Environment is multi-dimensional.
It can be sub-divided into the economic, political, technological
and cultural environment.
While each sub-environment can be viewed independently in its
specific national setting, they have become increasingly interrelated
through processes of globalisation.
In this unit, you will examine how the role of transactional
corporations has played a big part in the strengthening
of interrelationships across national borders.
Even though globalisation is to a certain extent responsible
for the convergence and economic integration
of nations, considerable diversity between nations and
regions still exists and continues to shape the International
Business Environment.
This unit emphasises that a thorough understanding of the global
forces, as well as acknowledgment of local
and regional differences, is essential for the international
manager in order to formulate effective global strategies in a
rapidly changing environment.

an applied assignment.
In order to broaden your decision making skills, this unit will
require you to investigate a variety of management tools
and operational research procedures used in business
management decision making.
The main objective is to enhance and further develop your existing
skills by utilising analytical and computer based techniques
commonly used in management and business activities.
Specific tasks you will be required to carry out includes the
production of a range of Simulation Algorithms used
in business management applications, analysing and evaluating
a selection of operational research tools used
in business management, assessing the appropriateness of various
approaches to decision analysis used in business
management and interpreting the systematic nature of network
analysis and its application in business management.

a single examination.
With the globalisation of markets, consumer and competitor research
has taken on a truly international character,
and this trend is likely to continue. Learning about consumers
and competitors is the key to implementing effective business
strategies.
Applied Research Methods for Business and Management aims to
explain and demonstrate the link between the real world
business problems and business management literature.
You will investigate the role of business literature
in converting real business problems into research
questions that generate valuable information managers
can use as input in the decision-making process.
There are several research methodologies, tools
and techniques that research managers use to
gather accurate data. This unit will enable you to select the
most appropriate method for a specific research
problem, taking into considering the strengths and limitations
of the chosen research method as well as the resource
constraints of your organisation.
Finally, you will learn how to analyse, interpret
and present your research findings in
an organised and well-structured report.

STAGE 4 DISSERTATION IN HOTEL & HOSPITALITY
MANAGEMENT
(3/6 months)
The actual content of this work will vary with each student's proposal
but you will be required to spend a minimum of 450 hours
undertaking it.
The proposal topic must be in an appropriate Hotel or Hospitality-related
field and formally approved
by the module leader (Sunderland) to ensure that it is manageable
and of acceptable academic worth.
Your final report will be approximately 15,000 to 20,000
words in length but you are expected to prepare a plan
and to demonstrate management skills throughout the duration of
the dissertation.
There are various stages for a dissertation and
it is recommended that you plan you time accordingly to ensure you
do not miss any of the disciplines involved or any of the deadlines.
Guidance will be given by your tutor throughout your project.
In undertaking the dissertation you must draw upon a combination
of perspectives from across the programme and support your investigations
with appropriate reference to theoretical and conceptual analysis.

2. How much do I have to pay as a minimum deposit?
This will depend on your nationality:
• If you are an EU National, you must pay
at least 1/3 of the total course fees before your

4. Can I apply for a scholarship/award?
We do offer a limited number of scholarships/awards to selected
students in the form of a fee reduction of up to
£2,000 per annum. To apply for a scholarship you must write
an essay of about 500 words entitled: “Why should
I receive a grant and what can I bring to enhance the Oxford House
College Community?”
Please submit this essay together with your application form and
other documents to The Director of Management & Computer
Studies. Your specific situation and financial
circumstances (as outlined in your letter) will be considered
when we make our decision.
5. How long do I need to study for?
You can complete the full MBA programme in only 12 months
without the work placement or in 18 months with
the work placement if you want to study full-time.
Part-time students can take fewer modules at a
time to reduce the workload but just remember that this means you
will take longer to complete your course. This will give you the
flexibility you need to balance your educational, employment and
financial needs.
The course is divided into different stages so you can
start at a level that suits your current academic qualifications.
You can finish your studies after the DMS or you can continue to
the Top Up depending on what you feel your education and employment
needs are. You will receive a globally recognised diploma
after each programme.
6. What is the attendance policy at Oxford House College?
In order to comply with various regulations, we expect our students
to attend a minimum of 85% of their classes throughout
their course. Teachers will keep a record of each student’s
attendance throughout the term.
You will be marked absent if you arrive more than 20 minutes late
for class or leave the class more than 20 minutes early.
You are only allowed to be absent for a maximum of 4 classes
per module each term and will be sent a warning letter
after each class that you miss.
You will get 3 warning letters, after which you
face expulsion from the school. If you are ill
or have an emergency, you need to inform your teacher who will excuse
you from the class.
7. Can Oxford House College give me a place to stay while I study?
If you need a place to stay while you study we offer a choice of
Hostel accommodation or Homestay
with a host family at affordable prices. We want your stay to be
special so our Accommodation Officers are trained to find you a
place that suits your lifestyle.
8. What qualifies as a full-time student?
In order to qualify as a full-term student you need to take at
least 3 modules per term. Because our courses are fast-track
some students find 4 or 5 modules per term a bit demanding. It is
possible to reduce the number of modules you take but it is important
to understand that you will then spread your study period over a
longer time.
9. Is this college accredited to support me if I am on a student
visa?
A large proportion of our students come from other countries and
are applying for a student visa at the time they enrol with us,
so we are fully aware of the UK Home Office’s requirements.

12. What kind of job can I look for after the course?
Having reached such a prestigious level of education and training,
previous students of this course have gone on to take up managerial
positions in both the commercial and non-commercial
sector. With a specialisation in the Travel & Tourism
Industry, this particular MBA programme will also make candidates
highly versatile when considering how they would
like their careers to develop.
Some of our recent graduates have taken up posts as Customer Service
Managers, Marketing and Operations Managers and Finance Managers

13. What happens if I fail a module?
If you fail a module at Diploma level, you may
resit the examination in the next session for a £25
fee. At Advanced Diploma level the resit fee is
£30 and £110 per module
in your final year. You are welcome to attend the
class for a module that you have failed or you can just resit the
exam.
14. What do the course fees include?
Course fees include exam registration, lecturers and your study
guide, access to modern computer facilities and internet access
plus wireless connectivity if you have your own laptop.
Course fees do not include resit and exemption
fees, maintenance costs or additional study materials.
15. Do I need to pay a registration fee?
We do charge a registration fee which is included in your
course fee. However, if you request a refund because your
visa was refused or any other valid reason, we will refund the fees
you have paid to date less a £65 registration fee.
Please note that this registration fee will be increased
to £95 if you have enrolled for a course that includes
the final degree year, for example the BA (Hons)
top up or the MBA top up. This is due to the extra administration
required when we process degree-course applications.
